FUN THINGS GOING ON - Happy 250th

Greetings!

We have made it to 250 years of independent sovereignty!  The Great experiment continues. It is always exciting to be able to participate in significant moments in History.  I still remember the bicentennial in 1975 when everything was covered in red-white-blue including the fire hydrants.  Everyone adopted the fire hydrant closest to their home an painted them in patriotic themes.  It was fun to be so involved.  It was a novel way for us to express our Joy at this significant milestone in our history.  I am very much looking forward to the 4th of July parade this year.  Are you doing something special to celebrate this milestone this year?

This is also the week Lent begins on Wednesday, so Mardi Gras activities are in full swing.  Check out activities below. Time to pick up your Fastnacht doughnuts.  Mom says she saw some at Publics.

Lenten doughnuts, often known as Pączki (Polish) or Fasnachts (German/Pennsylvania Dutch), are rich, deep-fried pastries traditionally eaten before the fasting season of Lent. Prepared on Fat Thursday or Shrove Tuesday, they were designed to use up household lard, sugar, eggs, and fruit, which were forbidden during the 40-day Lenten fast.

Come to our session to learn all about what Hubbel Megs are, how to distinguish them from other megs and where you are most likely to find them (and other interesting fossils) on the Island.
This will be a hands-on activity with Reanna providing teeth to ID, but you are also welcome to bring in your own fossils, particularly any heart shaped ones. We will help you make identifications and will provide an official ID card for your favorite item.

Every year we celebrate President's Day on the 3rd Monday in February to honor President Washington's birthday.

Washington's Birthday was established in 1880 by an Act of Congress

The name President's Day was not in use until the 1980s

Although popular understanding of the holiday celebrates President Lincoln's birthday as well, the official federal holiday is for President Washington's Birthday only.

Some corresponding state holidays officially recognize the day as honoring both presidents.
