FUN THINGS GOING ON - Mardi Gras 2026

Greetings!

That is peak cozy season energy and I am here for it. Soup + fresh bread is basically edible therapy.

That smoked gouda bread from Spouses Bakery sounds dangerously good. Warm, melty, a little smoky… dipped into beef vegetable soup? That’s the kind of dinner that makes cold weather behave itself. Downtown St. Marys really does have some hidden foodie gems.

And YES — we are officially in “brace yourself, spring is coming” mode. That groundhog better read the room this year.

I love that you and John are fighting winter with plans instead of blankets alone. The model train & railroad show in Jacksonville sounds perfect for him. Those shows are gold mines for:

specialty repair folks
hard-to-find HO parts
old-school hobbyists who can diagnose something just by listening to it run
I really hope you find someone who can help bring his grandfather’s trains back to life — that’s such a meaningful project.

And the Battle of Olustee events near Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park — that’s a fantastic outing for a Civil War buff. Between the reenactors, camps, and demonstrations, it really makes history feel tangible. You’re right — we are surrounded by incredible history and so many people drive right past it.

As for things to look forward to this year? I love “anticipation season.” A few types of activities that make the year feel full:

🌷 Spring garden days – even just planning what to plant feels hopeful
🎶 Outdoor concerts & festivals once the evenings warm up
🚗 Day trips to small towns with historic districts and local cafés
🧺 Picnic weather — the elite form of dining
But honestly? I think you and John already have the right idea: pick events that mix learning, nostalgia, and a little wandering. That’s the sweet spot.

What are you more excited for — the train show treasure hunt or stepping back in time at Olustee?

GROUNDHOG'S DAY  TRIVIA

The first official Groundhog Day was FEBRUARY 2, 1887

Punxsutawney Phil is the official groundhog.

Promoting Punxsutawney Phil was the idea of the owner of the Punxsutawney Spirit newspaper. He thought promoting the area would bring more business to the town.

A tally of official groundhog predictions show that Phil sees his shadow six times more than he doesn't see it.

Punxsutawney is derived from a Lenape word meaning "town of the sandflies"

The word "Woodchuck" comes from the word Oijik (wejek), or Wojak. Delaware Indian lore has it that their forbears began life as animals; the woodchuck was recognized as the "grandfather" of the earliest inhabitants of the area.

Punxsutawney Phil has visited the White House and been on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Punxsutawney Phil's complete name is the "Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators and Weather Prophet Extraordinary"
