FUN THINGS GOING ON - Memorial Day 2026

Greetings!

How are you spending these beautiful weather days? The low humidity won't last much longer. Memorial Day is in one week and summer is around the corner. That reminds me, I need to make an appointment for a haircut for the warmer weather. The devil is always in the details.

John and I just returned from our nephew David’s wedding in Oak Island, NC. The bride’s family, Kayla’s side, is from Long Island, and there was such a comfortable and joyful interaction between the two families. They did bring along some unique traditions for these two Catholic families.

A group of the younger men (alcohol may have been involved 😊) performed the Hava Nagila tradition, lifting the bride in a chair and parading her around the room. Due to point #1, they then decided the groom should receive the same treatment, which required considerably more effort. In a further gesture of celebration, they lifted the Best Man’s two daughters, ages 11 and 7, and carried them around the room as well — accompanied by much laughter and giggling. It truly was a wonderful celebration.

Some of you know I collect family wedding photos which I display together on a wall in my home. This will be the newest addition to the collection.

The other item I wanted to share came from our church bulletin this past weekend. Our priest, Fr. Gerard, is a Benedictine monk from a monastery in Cleveland. The monastery has a long-standing relationship with the U.S. Navy, providing priests for the military diocese. Fr. Gerard taught in Catholic schools for 45 years, so he is a natural educator and gifted speaker.

This weekend he shared a fascinating piece of history about the first commissioned warship for the state of Ohio. I thought many of you might enjoy it as well.

Warm Regards,

Cathy
